iPhone 13 Singapore – All You Need to Know

Apple iPhone 13 Singapore – It’s September and just like clockwork, Apple released their iPhone 13 series alongside the Apple Watch Series 7, iPad Mini, and a new entry-level iPad! Here’s all you need to know about the latest iPhone.

iPhone 13 – What’s new?

Similar to the Apple iPhone 12 series, we will be getting a standard iPhone 13, an iPhone 13 Mini, an iPhone 13 Pro, and an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

What’s different this year, however, is that we will be getting all the iPhone 13 lineup at once. Unlike last year’s iPhone 12 series where Apple pushed the iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max to a later date.

iPhone 13 Release Date

The Apple iPhone 13 series was announced on 14th September 2021, and the pre order starting on 17 September 2021 at 8 PM SGT. Do note that Apple mentioned on their website stating that one customer is only entitled to pre-order a maximum of two iPhones and depending on stock availability.

The new lineups will officially be available in Singapore on 24 September 2021.

iPhone 13 Price in Singapore

This year’s Apple iPhone is mostly the same when it comes to the price. However, you will be getting more for your buck as the starting storage for the regular model and Mini model is now 128GB. The Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, goes up to 1TB of storage!

iPhone 12 Pro MaxS$ 1799S$ 1969S$ 2299

From the tables above, we can see that iPhone 13’s prices in Singapore are actually cheaper compared to last year’s iPhone 12 lineup – take iPhone 12 64GB for example, it cost S$1299 and the new iPhone 13 128GB comes at the same price at S$1299. That’s twice the storage for the same price and other upgrades!

iPhone 13 Design and Display – Brighter Screen, Smaller Notch.

Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 13 series has a similar flat-edge standard rectangular shape design to that of the iPhone 12. However, all the new iPhones will be heavier and thicker than their predecessor counterpart. They also continue to be compatible with MagSafe accessories. MagSafe

The screen size is 5.42 inches on the iPhone 13 mini, 6.06 inches for both iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, and 6.68 inches on the 13 Pro Max diagonally. The actual viewable area is a tiny bit lesser.

The increase is mostly due to Apple increasing the battery capacity, which considerably increased the battery life of all the iPhones in the lineup. Apple boasted that the Pro and Pro max models are able to see up to 22 hours and 28 hours of video playback respectively. Those are amazing numbers as the 12 Pro Max and 12 Pro saw to 20 hours and 17 hours respectively only.

The regular models will feature the Apple-Custom OLED Super Retina XDR displays which Apple says are 28% brighter, up to 800 nits. Both models’ displays can also go up to 1200 nits when playing HDR content.

Meanwhile, the big brother Pro and Pro Max feature OLED Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion which Apple said to be 25% brighter when using outdoor.

All iPhones in the new lineup will continue to feature Apple’s Ceramic Shield. The ceramic shield technology developed by Corning, a company that makes gorilla glass, was first introduced in the iPhone 12 series. Since its first incorporation, Apple claims “it’s tougher than any smartphone glass”.

Adding on, all the new iPhones are IP68 dust resistance and water resistance, which was tested under controlled laboratory conditions under IEC standard. This standard will allow the iPhones to survive spill, splash, dust, and a submerge maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes. However, take note that resistance levels are not permanent conditions and might decrease due to wear and tear.

One big design change that Apple fans have been enthusiastic about is the decrease in the notch size. Thanks to Apple for redesigning the layout of the TrueDepth camera housing, the notch in the iPhone 13 is now 20% smaller compared to its predecessor. Albeit it is also a tiny bit taller. But if the notch size was never a pet peeve for you, then this wouldn’t bother you as much.

iPhone 13 series will also be getting the ProMotion feature, but it will only be available in the pro models. iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max’s Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion will be able to ramp up their refresh rate up to 120Hz and all the way down to 10hz depending on what is the phone being used for.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini have 5 color options – Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Product(RED). Pink is a new color introduced in the bunch, but to be honest it looks more like gold.

On the other hand, iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have 4 color options: Sierra Blue Silver Gold Graphite. A new color is also introduced in the Pro Models – Siera Blue.

iPhone 13 Camera – Bigger, Better, Best.

All the new iPhone 13 lineup will feature new camera upgrades, including Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization, Cinematic Mode, Macro Photography, and many more.

As mentioned, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini will now feature a diagonally designed dual camera system. The reason behind the little tweak is actually quite technical. Firstly, all the new iPhones will be equipped with the Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization.

The new stabilization system adjusts the camera sensor to compensate hand jitter to produce more stabilized photos and videos. To achieve this, a bigger camera module is needed for the readjustment to work.

To address this issue, hence the diagonal design. See the GIF below a few times and be amazed by the amazing camera in your grasp! Side note, the Sensor-Shift feature used to be an exclusive feature for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. And now, it is available in all the new iPhones.

Apple Smart HDR 3 in the iPhone 12 lineup has been providing very impressive images both in quality and resolution, yet Apple has once again improved their computational photography by upgrading to Smart HDR 4 in the new series.

Apple Smart HDR 3 in the iPhone 12 lineup has been providing very impressive images both in quality and resolution, yet Apple has once again improved their computational photography by upgrading to Smart HDR 4 in the new series.

Apple also made a huge leap in the videography department by introducing the “Cinematic Mode”. The feature essentially allows users to rack focus from one subject to another – a technique often used in filmmaking by shifting the focus of the lens in a continuous shot. Traditionally, “rack focus” requires careful planning and complex camera setups to be achieved. On the iPhone 13, Apple’s computational photography allows one to shoot a Holywood-style video from their iPhones!

The cinematic mode adds shallow depth of field and intelligently shifts the focus to another subject based on the depth of field. See the GIF below to get a grasp of how it works.

Every smartphone photo has a style and it differs from one brand to another. iPhone’s photos are generally well contrasted and well exposed. If you find yourself always adjusting your photo, Apple’s new “Photographic styles” are for you.

Photographic styles are essentially preset that allow users to apply their own preferences before taking the image. It is different from simply applying a filter to your image, instead, it keeps skin tones natural while reducing or amping up the contrast of a scene. Photographic styles will understand each element- skin tones, sky, etc, in the photo and adjust accordingly by using Apple’s multi-frame image processing.

While all new iPhones have upgraded cameras, the Pro camera system gets all the bells and whistles. The standard and Mini iPhones have a new sensor in their 12MP shooter which lets in 47% more light which improves the Night Photography experience. The Ultra-wide camera also gets a faster sensor.

The Pro models – iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, features even more drastic changes compared to its predecessor counterparts and its little brothers – iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini.

The triple camera lens on the Pro iPhones consists of an f/1.5 wide shooter, an f/1.8 Ultrawide lens, and an f/2.8 Telephoto lens. The wide shooter is capable of letting in 2.2x more light. While the ultrawide lens lets in 92% more light and new Autofocus capabilities for superb low-light performance. The LiDar scanner is still available only on the Pro and Pro Max models, enabling users to produce clearer night mode portraits.

The ultrawide lens is also working together with the autofocus feature to enable macro shooting as near as 2cm from the subject! This essentially means the Pro and the Pro Max have a fourth camera built into the Ultrawide angle lens. Side note, macro videos can also be taken using this feature.

Next is the new telephoto camera armed with a 77mm lens. It now features a 3x optical zoom, combined with the Ultrawide lens, Pro iPhones are capable of having 6x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom.

iPhone 13 Battery – All day, every day! YAY!

Again, all the new iPhone 13 will a big leap in battery life compared to its iPhone 12 series counterpart. Apple says the iPhone 13 series will sport a bigger battery, iOS 15, and the A15 Bionic Processor Chip works together to efficiently reduce battery consumption.

Apple also mentioned that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini will hold a charge for 17 – 19 hours of video playbacks, while the iPhone 13 Pro is capable of running 22 hours and Pro Max is capable of holding on to 28 hours.

Apple hasn’t disclosed any information regarding the battery capacity, but more batteries us always welcoming.

The new iPhones will continue to feature the MagSafe wireless charging and Qi wireless charging which can go up to 15W and 7.5W respectively. The iPhone 13 lineup will also offer fast-charge capabilities, but a 20W or higher charging adapter is needed and is sold separately.

The fast charging capabilities are said to be able to get iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, and the iPhone 13 Pro from 0% to 50% in under 30 minutes while the iPhone 13 Pro Max will get to 50% charge under 35 minutes.

iPhone 13 A15 Bionic Chip – PURE. PRO. POWER.

The iPhone 13 lineup will be featuring the new A15 Bionic processor, an upgrade from Apple’s A14 on the iPhone 12. Apple claimed that the chip is a 50% faster CPU and a 30% faster GPU compared to its competition. The new 16-core neural engine is now capable to process 15.8 trillion operations per second up from the previous 11 trillion operations per second.

One important thing to mention, the pro models this time around boast a 5-core GPU while the non-Pro models will get a 4-core GPU.

iPhone 13 in Singapore – Which should you buy?

The iPhone 13 series lineup shares a lot of similarities among them. Some of the biggest highlights that could be the deciding factors are:

  • The screen display: You will only find the ProMotion feature in iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. With the ProMotion feature, you will be able to enjoy the 120Hz screen refresh rate and ultra-smooth gaming experience.
  • The camera system: While all iPhone 13 cameras got upgraded from the 12, the Pro models get all the premium upgrades. You get the ability to Shoot Macro Photography on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, a better depth sensor with LiDar, and the new 77mm Telephoto Lens which now provides 3X optical zoom.
  • Better battery life: This year, all the iPhone 13 models in the new lineup has upgraded battery capacity compared to their predecessors. Combining the A15 chip efficiency and the bigger capacity, Apple claimed that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max will get 2.5 hours longer battery life, and the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 Pro will get 1.5 hours more battery life when compared to their iPhone 12 series counterparts.
  • Improved 5G: iPhone 13 series will get an upgrade in the 5G capability too. However, the 5G speeds vary based on a lot of external conditions such as carrier providers and service areas.

All in all, the regular iPhones are good enough for normal business days usage. While the Pro iPhones suit gamers and photographers where the extra GPU and the lenses are meant for.
