iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Series Lineup Changes
The iPhone 17 family now consists of four distinct models: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. With this generation, Apple has officially retired the “Plus” name. In its place is the iPhone Air — a model that carries the big-screen appeal of Plus but does so in an ultra-thin, modern design with upgraded materials and a lighter build. For context, last year’s iPhone 16 lineup comprised of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which could be considered the normal lineup Apple has pushed over the years until the recent release of the iPhone 17 series.
This year, beyond the lineup rename, Apple pushes visible changes: the ultra-thin iPhone Air replaces Plus, and the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max adopt a aluminium unibody with a new rear camera plateau — a broad, raised plane that reshapes the back and packages larger camera and internal components — making them visibly different from the titanium-framed iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max design.
By simplifying the lineup, Apple makes it easier for consumers to pick what fits their needs. If you previously liked the Plus, the iPhone Air is the natural successor and is covered in detail further below. For those who want maximum performance, the Pro and Pro Max models provide the most versatile camera systems and the largest storage options.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: Comparison
Design and Display
The iPhone 17 introduces a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display with adaptive ProMotion up to 120 Hz — providing a smoother experience for scrolling, games and animations. This is the first time Apple has provided non-Pro devices with ProMotion, including it for all 4 devices in the iPhone 17 series.
Furthermore, the iPhone 17 features Ceramic Shield 2 that delivers 3× better scratch resistance, plus enhanced anti-reflective layers to reduce glare. Outdoor peak brightness hits 3,000 nits, with typical brightness around 1000 nits and HDR peaks near 1600 nits, making screen visibility in bright sunlight much improved. In terms of the build, the iPhone 17 uses an IP68-rated aluminium frame with water and dust resistance. It measures 7.95 mm in depth and weighs 177 grams.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a fixed 60 Hz refresh rate, Ceramic Shield front, and standard coatings. Its peak outdoor brightness is about 2000 nits, typical use around 1000 nits, with HDR peaks near 1600 nits. While it also has an aluminium frame and the same IP68 rating, it does not include the newer anti-reflection coating or Ceramic Shield 2 found on the iPhone 17. The iPhone 16 measures 7.80 mm in depth and weighs 170 grams.
Camera Capabilities
The iPhone 17 introduces a Dual Fusion rear camera system combining a 48MP Fusion Main wide lens with a 48MP Fusion ultrawide lens. It also offers a 2× “optical-quality” telephoto crop using the Main lens for closer framing without physically adding a telephoto lens. By comparison, the base iPhone 16 uses a dual-camera rear setup: a 48MP Main wide lens (same focal length, aperture, sensor-shift OIS, 100% Focus Pixels) plus a 12MP ultrawide (ƒ/2.2, 13 mm) lens. Thus, while both share the wide-angle hardware and core image pipeline, the 17 boosts ultrawide resolution and adds the built-in 2× crop option.
On the front, the iPhone 17 steps up with an 18MP Centre Stage square-sensor camera, which enables wider framing (including for landscape selfies), Dual Capture (front + rear recording), and more stabilised HDR/4K video recording. The iPhone 16 retains a 12MP TrueDepth front camera, which continues to support Apple’s standard front-camera features like Portrait, Night Mode, etc. Both devices share the same computational photography foundations (Smart HDR / Photonic Engine, etc.), meaning improvements in the 17 are about added resolution, framing flexibility, and ultrawide capture rather than wholesale new fundamentals.
Performance, Battery, and Storage
With the iPhone 17, Apple introduces the A19 chip, which brings performance and efficiency upgrades over the A18 used in the iPhone 16. The A19 includes similar architecture (6-core CPU, 5-core GPU for base models) but adds higher system cache, better memory bandwidth, and other refinements to improve responsiveness in real-world usage. Both the 17 and 16 base models offer 8 GB RAM, but the 17 starts with 256 GB base storage, double the 16’s 128 GB base. Higher storage tiers (e.g. 512 GB) remain options for both.
For battery life, Apple claims the iPhone 17 can achieve up to 30 hours of video playback, compared to up to 22 hours for the iPhone 16 in similar usage/video settings. This reflects gains not just from a more efficient chip, but also possibly from display optimisations and power-management improvements. These upgrades suggest that users of the base model iPhone 17 will see meaningful improvements in daily battery endurance versus the 16, especially during tasks like video viewing or media consumption.
iPhone Air vs iPhone 16 Plus: Comparison
Design and Display
Being Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, the iPhone Air is just 5.6 mm thick and weighs 165 g, which makes it noticeably slimmer and lighter than the iPhone 16 Plus, which measures 7.8 mm in depth and weighs 199 g. The Air upgrades the build with a titanium frame and new Ceramic Shield 2 front glass, adding improved scratch resistance and anti-reflection. In contrast, the 16 Plus sticks with the standard aluminium design and original Ceramic Shield front; while solid and durable, it does not include the newer front-glass improvements or titanium frame of the Air.
On display, the iPhone Air uses a 6.5″ LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED with adaptive ProMotion up to 120 Hz, which makes for smoother scrolling, animations and more responsive interaction. Outdoor peak brightness is much higher on the Air (3000 nits) with HDR peaks around 1,600 nits, so legibility in sunlight is improved. By comparison, the 16 Plus has a larger 6.7″ Super Retina XDR OLED display but is limited to a fixed 60 Hz refresh rate. Although the brightness is good, it does not match the Air’s higher brightness ceiling or the fluidity of 120 Hz visuals.
Camera Capabilities
The iPhone Air is equipped with a single 48MP Fusion main (wide) camera, which matches the main wide camera spec of the iPhone 16 Plus. However, where they differ is in lens variety: the 16 Plus includes an ultrawide 12MP lens in addition to the main wide camera, giving users more flexibility for landscape, group shots, or tight framing. The Air lacks that extra ultrawide module, which means no dedicated ultrawide shots, and no macro mode via an ultrawide camera.
On the front selfie-camera side, the Air takes a step up: it houses the new 18MP Center Stage camera, which enables dynamic framing and slightly higher resolution for selfies or video calls. By comparison, the iPhone 16 Plus retains the 12MP TrueDepth front camera, which still supports Apple’s standard imaging features (Portrait, Night Mode, etc.). In terms of video and image processing, both phones share many of Apple’s software strengths: Photonic Engine, Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, lens correction, and advanced stabilisation on the main wide camera.
Performance, Battery, and Storage
The iPhone Air is built around the A19 Pro chip, offering a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, larger system-level cache, and memory bandwidth improvements over the A18 found in the iPhone 16 Plus. It also pairs with 12 GB RAM, which improves multitasking and performance in heavier tasks such as editing video in higher resolution or running demanding apps. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus uses the A18 with 8 GB RAM. On storage, the Air starts at 256 GB and scales up to 1 TB, whereas the 16 Plus’s top storage option is 512 GB, giving users more room for apps, photos, and future media without needing to rely on external storage.
Battery life in the Air matches the claims for the 16 Plus in key metrics: both offer up to 27 hours of video playback, as claimed by Apple. The Air also delivers up to 22 hours of streaming video playback per Apple’s specification. Despite its thinner and lighter design, it maintains these strong battery metrics, showing gains in efficiency via the A19 Pro and other hardware design refinements. Given these numbers, users looking for a lighter phone need not feel they’re giving up battery performance compared to the 16 Plus.

The Pro Max version mirrors the same rear sensor improvements: 48MP Fusion on all three rear lenses, with upgraded telephoto replacing the 12MP lens of the 16 Pro Max. Zoom flexibility improves with 4× optical, and higher quality at long distances via sensor crop. The ultrawide and wide sensors are still 48 MP, keeping consistent resolution for non-telephoto shots. Front-facing camera moves to 18 MP Center Stage on the 17 Pro Max, again improving selfie/video features compared to the 12MP on the 16 Pro Max.

Final Thoughts
Upgrading from iPhone 16 to iPhone 17 brings noticeable benefits — especially in display smoothness (thanks to ProMotion on non-Pro models), camera versatility (higher resolution, better ultrawide or telephoto options depending on the model), and generous storage baseline. If you value weight/design, outdoor visibility, or video/photo performance, models like the iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone Air offer strong leaps forward. On the other hand, if you’re satisfied with current performance and camera/memory needs, the iPhone 16 remains a capable device with many shared strengths (like build quality and core features).
For most users, the sweet spot might lie in balancing what you really use — if you take lots of photos, want smoother animation, or want more storage, the new iPhone 17 series will be preferred. But for those whose usage is lighter (social media, messaging, light camera work), saving while sticking with the 16 could make sense. In short: iPhone 17 is more than just incremental — it sets new standards in certain areas — but whether you upgrade depends on what features matter most to you.
