Rumored iPhone 14 lineups
At the time of writing, we are approximately 2 months away from the annual iPhone release event, yet, we have seen so many leaks and rumors since the release of the iPhone 13.
As usual, we will be seeing 4 iPhone 14s in the lineup, what’s different this year round is the lack of a mini 5.4” model. Instead, we will get a 6.7” iPhone 14 Max.
Apple is eliminating the Mini series in iPhones due to lackluster sales. Reportedly, iPhone 12 Mini series only took 6% of the total iPhone 12 series sold.
With this, the iPhone 14 lineup will be:
- iPhone 14 ( 6.1” )
- iPhone 14 Max (6.7”)
- iPhone 14 Pro (6.1”)
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7”)
iPhone 14: No notch, New FaceID hardware
The notch of an iPhone has always been in a love-hate relationship between the brand and its consumer.
Me, personally, have never been bothered by the notch. Admittedly, I am a huge Apple fan and I am deep in their ecosystem, hence I could be a little
However, rumor has it that the iPhone 14 line ups will see to the removal of the notch and replaced with a pill-shaped cutout and a dot-hole cutout. Most likely the pill-shaped hole will house the selfie camera while the dot-hole hole will house the FaceID Dot Projector.
Some rumors mentioned that this new design will only be for the Pro models while the Non-pro models will continue to look like the iPhone 13.

Size and Body Designs
The iPhone 14 will see to the end of a Mini iPhone. While the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini remains one of the most sold phones around the globe, to Apple however, the sales was lacklustre compared to other bigger iPhones. Hence, we will not see an iPhone 14 Mini, instead we will get a 6.7” iPhone 14 Max – a iPhone 14 but with Max size.
Design wise, iPhone 14s will most likely look similar to iPhone 13s with some tweaks; flat-edged, thicker chassis, and round shaped buttons instead of the long shaped ones.
Pro-Motion Display
Earlier rumours suggested that ProMotion display will be available for all iPhone 14 in 2022. But Ross Young – a reputable Display Analyst, suggests that Apple will restrict 120Hz to Pro models due to lack of display availability.
Another feature which was rumoured since way back in iPhone 12, was also revived by Mark Gurman – a reputable tech reporter, the Always-on Display could be available on the iPhone 14s.
New Colors
Some rumours also suggest that we could see a new purple shade which changes tone depending base on lighting conditions. Besides purple there had been rumours suggesting a brand new bronze color as well.
Based on Apple’s usual color standard, we could see the purple finish be only for the Pro models. As for the bronze, there are too little news to make any guesses.
Lightning or Type-C
Unless Apple pulls a big one on us, the iPhone 14 lineups will continue to use lightning ports instead of the Type-C which their fans have been asking for since back in Pre covid periods.
However, we could see Type-C iPhones in 2023 during their iPhone 15 release. Reportedly, Apple has been looking to remove the lightning port but not with Type-C, instead Apple is aiming to go portless and wholly depend on MagSafe.
iPhone 14: Camera upgrades
According to Apple Analyst – Kuo Ming-Chi, the upcoming 2022 iPhones will get a huge camera upgrade to its Wide-Angle camera.
The main reason for the larger and more prominent rear-camera bump of the 14 Pro/Pro Max is upgrading the wide camera to 48MP (vs. 13 Pro/Pro Max’s 12MP). The diagonal length of 48MP CIS will increase by 25-35%, and the height of 48MP’s 7P lens will increase by 5-10%. Click here for more information.

It is believed that Apple could put a 48MP wide angle camera into the iPhone 14 lineups, which is a HUGE upgrade to their current iPhones with 12MP cameras.
However, the 48MP camera upgrade could only be available for the Pro models while non pro iPhone 14 models will see a more modest camera setup.
iPhone 14: A16 or M1?
New iPhones usually comes with a new A-series, again, unless Apple pulls a super huge stunt on us.
Since we will not see M1, then it’s going to be A16 obviously. Well , not really…
According to Kuo Ming-Chi, Apple could deviate from their usual practice and reserve the new and faster A16 chip for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max only, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will be using the A15 chipset.
iPhone 14: Estimated release date
Since the release of iPhone 7, Apple has been sticking to a more consistent schedule of when they are revealing their new iPhones. Here are a brief timeline of the last few iPhone releases:
- iPhone 7: 16 September, 2016
- iPhone 8: 22 September, 2017
- iPhone X: 3 November, 2018
- iPhone 11: 20 September, 2019
- iPhone 12: 23 October, 2020
- iPhone 13: 23 September, 2021
Other than the two exceptions iPhones 12 and iPhone X, Apple has consistently stick to releasing iPhones in September. iPhone 12’s delay was caused by the pandemic, while the iPhone X was actually revealed in September but only became available in November.
iPhone 14’s release date will be sometime in September. There has been reports stating that the exact date iPhone 14 will be revealed is on 13 September, 2022 and be available for per-order on 16 September, 2022.
iPhone 14: What I would like to see?
Under Display Camera Unit: Although the notch on the iPhone never bothered me in anyways, it is still fascinating to see a under display camera unit being implemented which essentially take iPhones up a notch, by removing it’s notch.
Foldable iPhones: To be exact, a Flip iPhone. I have a weird attraction towards Flip phones, it takes me back in time. When I saw Samsung’s Flip phone, I almost went for it but having a flip phone wasn’t enough to deviate me from the ecosystem. So, I will continue to wait….
Bigger Battery or Type-C Charging: The battery life of iPhones has always been it’s weakness. However, as A-series chips getting faster and more efficient, battery life in iPhone 13s has significantly improved. But sometimes I still ran out of battery before the day ends on my iPhone 13 Pro. With bigger batteries and Type-C charging – which means faster charging, would be helpful for heavy users like me.
